Educational Programs It’s A Maize-ing!

Exploring the role of agriculture in Jefferson County’s history.

In this program, students will learn about the importance of corn, hogs, and starch in early Madison, Indiana. This 90-minute FREE program offers:

  • A hands-on experience of “notching” a paper pig to show ownership of one of 200 registered hog owners in Jefferson County.
  • A lesson on the two main uses of corn starch (food and laundry/other) and making chocolate pudding with starch to show how starch molecules work.
  • A lesson on how corn has been developed through the ages and its many uses.
  • The book Lucky Year will be referenced.  Each teacher will receive a free copy after the program.

This program is geared toward third-grade students and is a great source of information prior to the Agricultural Day experience held in mid-September.
